How do I apply for a National Insurance number?

To apply for a national insurance number you must be in the
UK and have the right to work or right to study in the UK.

Call the National Insurance application line to apply: 0800 141 2075, Monday – Friday 8am – 6pm.

Once you’ve applied you’ll get a letter from the Dept of
Work and Pensions asking you to attend an interview at a Job Centre. You’ll need to bring proof of identity, such
as: Passport, identity card, residence permit, birth cert, or driving licence.

You can start work before you get your NI number if you can
prove you have the right to work in the UK. Tell your employer that you’ve applied for it, and give it to them when
you have it.
